St. John's Wort has recently been introduced into mainstream medicine as an alternative to conventional antidepressants. An often cited study done by Klaus Linde of the Center for Complementary Medicine Research, in Munich, Germany, found that the hypericum extract taken from the herb was as effective as the more commonly prescribed counterparts, but with fewer negative side effects. However, as with any medicine, natural or otherwise, there are some side effects to be aware of.
Drug Interactions
Researchers note that the side effects of St. John's Wort are minimal. The most common is possible interactions with certain medications. According to the FDA, hypericum extract and other St. John's Wort supplements may significantly decrease blood concentrations of indinavir, a medication use to treat HIV. The FDA also recommends not taking St. John's Wort while taking any anti-retroviral medications until further studies can be done. Additionally, the National Institutes of Health notes that taking St. John's Wort may possibly interfere some other drugs, including: birth control pills, cyclosporine, which prevents the body from rejecting transplanted organs, digoxin, which strengthens heart muscle contractions, drugs used to treat cancer and warfarin and related anticoagulants.
Sun Sensitivity
Although it is extremely rare, another possible side effect of taking St. John's Wort is increased sun sensitivity. Because of this effect sunburns may be more likely to occur. Therefore, it is important to use sunscreen, wear protective clothing and limit sun exposure, at least until you know if and how you will be effected by taking this supplement.
Caution for Diabetics
The liquid preparations of St. John's Wort, or hypericum extract, usually contain sugar and/or alcohol. Use with caution if you are diabetic, have liver disease or struggle with alcohol dependence. As with any herb or supplement, always ask your doctor or health care practitioner before trying this product. Diabetics or those with sensitivity to sugar should take St. John's Wort in capsule form.
Allergic Reactions
As with any supplement or medication, there is always the possibility of an allergic reaction. While allergic reactions can vary from person to person some symptoms to be aware of include rash, hives, itching, swelling of the mouth or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing. According to Med TV, some have reported other symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, fatigue and even insomnia. If you notice any of the above symptoms while taking St. John's Wort, see your doctor immediately.
