The Benefits & Side Effects of Valerian

Valerian has many potential and purported benefits that the FDA has not yet sanctified. Proponents of the herb claim it has effectiveness for the treatment of a headache, stress relief, stomach cramping, uterine problems, pain, menstruation difficulties involving discomfort and emotional distress. Other names for this herbal plant include capon's tail, setwall and all-heal. Ask your doctor about the possible effectiveness of valerian and its potential side effects before using it.

Headache Treatment

Since ancient times, people have sought remedies for pain, especially for headaches. Aspirin, for example, was derived from salicylate compounds in plants. Other plants, such as valerian, also may provide some relief from headache pain. If you use the supplement and do not find relief, call your medical practitioner. A headache may signify a serious health problem, such as untreated high blood pressure.

Menstrual Treatment

Herbalists also may recommend valerian supplements for women who suffer from menstrual pain, such as cramps. Valerian may also be useful in treating symptoms of PMS.

Stomach Cramping Treatment

Nervous stomach cramping may get some relief from the use of valerian. Having a nervous stomach can cause much discomfort at inconvenient times, such as during a job interview. Claims have been made that valerian may help with this nervous stomach and may take the cramps away.

Restlessness Treatment

If you feel restless, valerian may help you feel relaxed. This plant may solve the feeling of restlessness that may occur during high amounts of stress in your life. If you receive no relief from the restless feeling, then call your doctor for further treatment.

Anxiety Treatment

Treatment for anxiety will help you look at things in your life differently and to feel better. Valerian may help decrease your anxiety. However, persistent anxiety may need more controlled treatment. If you have relatively constant anxiety and it prevents you from fully participating in your life, ask your doctor or psychiatrist for help.

Dilated Pupils Side Effect

Your pupils may become dilated as a common side effect of valerian. If you have trouble seeing, and your vision changes, call your doctor. You will need to cease taking valerian at once. Always notify your doctor if visual differences occur as a result of a new medicine or herbal supplement.

Trouble Sleeping Side Effect

Difficulty sleeping may occur as a non-serious side effect of taking valerian. Your body needs time to adjust to the valerian supplement. If this side effect doesn't go away after a few days, call your doctor. You will also need to stop the supplement as well.
