Halitosis, more commonly known as bad breath, is a condition in which an offensive odor emanates from the mouth. This can be a source of embarrassment when speaking to someone or when you are in a confined space. Halitosis can have a variety of causes, from poor oral hygiene to eating foods that are themselves, odorous. Using treatments like mouthwash can help, but generally only mask the odors, rather than eliminating them. Certain herbs, however, can effectively fight the symptoms of halitosis. Always check with your doctor before using an herbal remedy.

Step 1

Drink a cup of hot eucalyptus tea three times a day. According to the University of Maryland, eucalyptus has both antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Halitosis can be caused by bacteria that migrate into the surfaces of your teeth, gums and tongue. Here, the bacteria proliferate and can cause inflammation and infection. These conditions can lead to halitosis and can be remedied over time with improved oral hygiene. Additionally, drinking eucalyptus tea can help keep bacteria away from your mouth, teeth and gums and allow your body to heal inflammation and infection.

Step 2

Chew on a sprig of fresh peppermint leaf several times a day. Peppermint is used in many remedies for halitosis including toothpastes and mouthwashes. The herb itself also has antibacterial and antiviral properties, which may help reduce halitosis by controlling bacteria that can lead to odor. In some cases, the odor of halitosis can be caused by digestive problems that cause bacteria to multiply, cause gas or lead to infection. By treating the stomach problems, you may also be able to fight your halitosis.

Step 3

Eat a piece of parsley after each meal. According to the website Mother Nature, parsley is a natural breath freshener that can also aid digestion.Carry a resealable bag with a couple of sprigs of parsley so you always have a way to freshen your breath during the day.

Step 4

Brush with a toothpaste or mouthwash that contains tea tree oil extract, which is available at your local health food store. Healthnotes explains that tea tree oil contains substances that can kill fungus and bacteria. Although the oil should never be ingested, it can be effective for killing bacteria that causes halitosis. Tea tree oil can also be used to heal inflammation and infection that occurs in the gums and mouth that can lead to bad breath.

Tips and Warnings

  • Consult your doctor before using any herbal remedy. In addition to eucalyptus, peppermint, caraway and cloves can also be made into a tea by adding 1 tsp. of the herb to a cup of hot water and allowing to steep for ten minutes.
