Heart disease -- a term generally used in reference to cardiovascular disease -- is a serious medical condition characterized by narrowing of the arteries which can lead to heart attack or stroke, says MayoClinic.com. Several lifestyle factors, such as diet and exercise, can help treat heart disease, but at times medications or surgery are required. Certain supplements may also be helpful. Although more research is needed, the University of Maryland Medical Center notes that the compound CoQ10, an enzyme found in your body as well as in certain foods and in supplement form, has been used to treat heart disease.

Step 1

Ask your doctor about CoQ10 supplements for the treatment of heart disease. CoQ10 supplementation may not be safe for everyone, and as with all supplements, CoQ10 supplements are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and may vary in quality and potency. Always consult your doctor to determine if CoQ10 may be helpful to you and, if so, what dosage to take.

Step 2

Take CoQ10 supplements with food containing fat to aid in absorption, advises the University of Maryland Medical Center. Because CoQ10 is a fat-soluble substance, ingesting it along with some dietary fat can help your body use it more effectively.

Step 3

Increase your consumption of foods rich in CoQ10. The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey states that the best dietary sources of CoQ10 are meats -- especially organ meats -- and poultry. Other sources include fatty fish, whole grains, eggs, dairy products, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower.

Things You'll Need

  • CoQ10 supplement
  • CoQ10-rich foods such as salmon, tuna, organ meats, eggs, dairy, whole grains and certain vegetables
