Erectile dysfunction is characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain a satisfactory erection. It may be caused by a number of factors including obesity, stress, smoking and hypertension. Men that suffer from erectile dysfunction often find their condition distressing and embarrassing. Erectile dysfunction can usually be resolved by treating the causative factor. However, a number of treatments, including oral drug therapies and vacuum devices, are also available. Some herbs may also help alleviate erectile dysfunction, although scientific evidence to prove that they are effective is limited. Get advice from your doctor before using herbs.
Examples
The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that saw palmetto and yohimbe may help alleviate erectile dysfunction. Saw palmetto is often used as an alternative remedy for conditions affecting the prostate gland, while yohimbe contains a chemical that increases blood flow to the penis. Saw palmetto is often combined with another herb called Pygeum africanum. Ask your doctor how much of each of these herbal remedies you need to take to help treat erectile dysfunction.
Effectiveness
Studies examining the role of the saw palmetto and yohimbe as erectile dysfunction treatments are lacking. However, an early article by A.J. Riley published in the May 1994 issue of the "British Journal of Clinical Practice," notes that yohimbe appears to have a modest therapeutic benefit over placebo. More up-to-date information is lacking. MedlinePlus notes that while saw palmetto may be an effective treatment for prostate conditions, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that it can treat any other condition.
Side Effects
RxList.com states that yohimbe is likely safe when used under the direction of a medical professional. However, it may cause side effects including vomiting, insomnia, high blood pressure, anxiety and stomach upset. Although saw palmetto use is likely safe, it may cause mild side effects including headache, nausea and constipation. Saw palmetto has been linked with several incidences of liver and pancreas damage. However, whether saw palmetto was responsible for these effects is unclear.
Considerations
Yohimbe is contraindicated in a large number of conditions including diabetes, prostate problems, kidney disease, schizophrenia and depression. It may also interact with several other drugs including antidepressants and anti-hypertensives. Only use this herb under the direction of your doctor. Avoid using saw palmetto if you are scheduled to undergo surgery as it may increase the risk of bleeding. This herb may also interact with several other drugs including anticoagulants. Consult your doctor before using either of these herbs as a treatment for erectile dysfunction.
