Exercise equipment mats are good additions to your home gym which will protect both your equipment and your floors. Several manufacturers sell mats in a variety of sizes and colors to match the décor of your home. Like any piece of exercise equipment, your mat will require periodic care to keep it clean and extends its usability.

Benefits

One of the primary benefits of exercise equipment mats is to protect your investment in your exercise equipment. The exercise mat will prevent carpet fibers and other debris from getting into the mechanical mechanism of your equipment which can save you from a costly repair. It will also provide a stable surface and help eliminate the vibration of exercise equipment which may impact your workout. If your home gym has bare or wooden floors, exercise equipment mats will protect the surface of your floors from scratches and depressions from heavier exercise equipment.

Types

Mats are available which can match the average square foot area of different types of exercise machines such as treadmills and ellipticals. Some companies sell mats specific for their equipment such as the Bowflex equipment mat, which can be easily rolled up after use. You can also find equipment mats sold as interlocking squares, which can be customized to any size you need, and can be used for other functions such as a base for your exercise routines.

Materials

Standard exercise equipments are made of a variety of materials such as vinyl or rubber. You may also find earth-friendly, recycled rubber mats if you have concerns about the environmental impact of your purchases. These mats may be made from natural rubber or from recycled rubber products. These materials provide a non-slip surface whether you use with your treadmill or do your exercise ball routine on a mat.

Care

You can extend the life of your exercise equipment mat by following some basic care. If you use a mat with portable equipment, you will be able to clean your mat more often. Shake out your mat after you use it to remove any debris that may have fallen on it. You can also clean it periodically with a mild detergent solution to remove bacteria. This will help prevent odors from developing. If possible, you should also do the same maintenance on exercise mats under larger exercise equipment. You may also want to rotate the mat to prevent depressions from becoming holes. Be sure and allow your mat to dry thoroughly before using it again.
