The pedometer was first introduced the 1960's and has since become a popular device used by fitness walkers to measure the amount of steps taken during a period of time. Although the actual inventor of the pedometer is debatable, most often given mentioned are the Romans, Leonardo de Vinci and Thomas Jefferson. Pedometers have become very accurate since their humble beginnings. Although basic units measure steps, deluxe pedometers can also measure calories burned, miles covered and heart rate, according to Fitness Magazine.

Omron HJ-112 Digital Premium Pedometer

The HJ-112 Digital Premium Pedometer from Omron is the best pedometer available, according to Consumer Reports, featuring smart sensor technology allowing placement on a belt, pocket, or bag in a vertical or a horizontal position without affecting the accuracy of the pedometer. The HJ-112 measures walking as well as aerobic steps, time, distance and calculates calories and grams of fat burned. Although the HJ-112 can store 7-days of information, it automatically resets itself so it is ready for use each morning. As of 2011, the Omron HJ-112 retails for $22.

Oregon Scientific PE 823

Citing a field test conducted by CNN Money, the Oregon Scientific PE 823 is a highly accurate unit --- as accurate as 99-percent according to the reviewer. The PE 823 measures the steps, distance, total walking time, and calories burned. The targeting feature let you track progress towards your goal, and estimates when you will reach it. The PE 823 stores seven days of data in its memory. Testers approved of the compact size, but thought the screen challenging to read. As of 2011, the Oregon Scientific PE 823 pedometer retails for $20.

Timex Ironman Fitness Tracker

The best reviewed pedometer according to Consumer Search, the Timex Ironman Fitness Tracker has many features, including a wristwatch monitor that receives wireless data from the pedometer, providing easy viewing throughout the day. The Ironman Fitness Tracker measures steps, distances, and calories burned. Available in three colors, reviewers thought the watch too small for male users, but ideal for female runners and walkers. The Times Ironman Fitness Tracker, as of 2010, has a retail price of $70.

Accusplit Eagle 190 Multi-Function Pedometer

The Good Housekeeping Research Institute placed the Accusplit Eagle 190 pedometer at the top of their best pedometer list. Accusplit's top of the line pedometer, the Eagle 190 has a programmable goal tracking function that measures steps, distances, calories, and total activity times. The Eagle 190 is accurate tracking while running or walking because of its adjustable stride length feature. The Accusplit Eagle 190 Multi-Function pedometer as of 2011 has a retail price of $35.
