For some people, bowling isn't just a fun thing to do with friends on the weekends. Many bowlers get involved in competitive leagues, making it important to keep working on and improving your game. If you're looking to become a better bowler every time you step onto the lane, there are some steps you can take to hone your skills and be a more consistent player.

Step 1

Set up your stance by standing with your feet 3 to 4 inches apart and aligned. Stand upright with a slight bend in your knees. Hold the majority of the weight of the ball in your balance hand.

Step 2

Practice visualization as you stand in your stance. Pause momentarily and visualize the ball rolling down the lane, striking the pocket perfectly and getting a strike. Visualizing success can help your mental game, and only takes a few seconds before you start your shot.

Step 3

Take a large step forward with your swing-side foot to begin your bowling delivery. Push the ball forward and slightly up, as if you were going to sit it on a table in front of you. Take a step with your other foot, at the same time allowing the ball to swing down at your side.

Step 4

Allow the ball to swing back as far as possible as you take your third step. Do not try to pull the ball back using your hand or forearm. Push the ball forward as you take your fourth and final step. Slide on your foot and lean to the ball side as you swing your swing-side leg behind your other leg for balance.

Step 5

Keep your back straight as you release the ball first with your thumbs, then your fingers. Follow through on your swing by bringing your arm up in the same position it was in your beginning stance -- pointing straight up on the side of your body, not pulled in toward your body.

Tips and Warnings

  • Invest in a custom-fitted bowling ball and shoes rather than using house shoes and balls. Use a video camera to record your form, and ask a bowling coach or expert to review your form and give you suggestions for improvement.
