How to Cleanse the Colon With Epsom Salts

Epsom salt has a variety of medicinal uses, including soothing achy, sore muscles and relieving minor to moderate constipation. Epsom salt is a natural product, containing magnesium sulfate as its active ingredient. However, it is important to note that simply because a product is natural does not mean that it comes without risks. Improper use of Epsom salt as a colon cleanse can lead to hypermagnesmia, which is the condition of having too much magnesium in the body. Therefore, it is essential that you consult your physician prior to using Epsom salt, or any other product, to perform a colon cleanse.

Step 1

Mix 2 tsp. Epsom salt with 8 oz. water. Stir the water until the Epsom salt has fully dissolved, which may take 3 to 5 minutes.

Step 2

Drink the Epsom salt colon cleanse. The salty taste is unpleasant to many people, so you may wish to drink it with a straw. Placing the straw with its opening on the back of your tongue will allow you to drink the colon cleanse with as little as possible touching your taste buds.

Step 3

Remain near a restroom. An Epsom salt colon cleanse can produce a bowel movement in as little as 30 minutes.

Step 4

Drink another Epsom salt colon cleanse if you do not have a bowel movement within four hours after drinking the initial cleanse. A bowel movement should occur within two hours after the second cleanse.
