Many talented high school athletes have the dream of being honored with a full sports scholarship to a college or university. The reality is, only a small percentage of athletes get any type of scholarship at all, and even a smaller number have everything paid for. Elite high school athletes may have recruiters scouting their games and pursuing them for a scholarship, but most athletes have to do the work themselves. You will never get a sports scholarship if college coaches don't know who you are, and in the majority of cases, it is up to you to make it happen.

Step 1

Visit the NCAA Eligibility Center website early in your high school career to determine what you need to do to be eligible for a sports scholarship. Learn about which courses you should take and what kinds of grades are expected.

Step 2

Practice any parts of your game that need improvement to make yourself a more complete player. Study the best college players in your sport and watch for tendencies or qualities that make them appealing to college coaches, and then try to emulate those qualities.

Step 3

Create a marketing package for yourself, highlighting your skills for your prospective coaches to see. Start a small website and post videos of yourself playing your sport to make it easy for coaches to see what you can do.

Step 4

Contact colleges via email or telephone that you are interested in attending and ask about how to apply for scholarships. Send all applicable information and applications to the appropriate people at each college.
