You may follow high-protein, low-carb diets to lose weight or "cut" you muscles before a bodybuilding competition. While on a high-protein, low-carb diet, meals consisting of grilled meat and steamed vegetables can become monotonous. With a little ingenuity, low-carb, high-protein meals can provide variety without causing you to break your dietary rules. Before following any meal plan, consult with your doctor.
Breakfast
Mix up your breakfast with a few creative strategies. Line muffin tins with ham, crack an egg into each and bake until the egg sets. Serve two of these individual muffin cups with 1/4 cup raspberries for a low-carb breakfast with 22g of protein. Make pancakes with 1 cup almond flour, two eggs, 1/4 cup water, 2 tbsp. olive oil, a pinch of salt and 1 tbsp. agave nectar. The recipe makes about six pancakes, each with 1g of carbohydrates and 6g of protein.
Sandwiches and Wraps
Instead of giving up sandwiches and wraps, use creative alternatives to bread. Lettuce leaves or collard greens may stand in for a burger bun or taco shell. Use deli roast beef to wrap up Swiss cheese and coleslaw or turkey breast to hold shredded Monterey jack cheese and avocado slices.
Salads
A high-protein, low-carb meal standard is a salad made with lettuce and tomato, topped with grilled chicken. Vary your salads by using proteins, such as shrimp or grilled tuna, and serve over thinly sliced raw kale mixed with slivers of red bell pepper, peanuts and a dressing made from olive oil, cider vinegar, a pinch of salt and a small amount of agave nectar. Make a lettuce-free salad from diced ham, bell peppers, tomatoes, red onion and celery. Dress with red wine vinegar, Dijon mustard and olive oil.
Meat and "Potatoes"
If you crave steak and mashed potatoes, use cauliflower as a stand-in for the high-carb starch. Boil cauliflower and drain, then mash with butter-flavored salt and a dash of cream. Serve with seared sirloin or another lean cut of steak. Cubes of cauliflower can also sub for potatoes in potato salad recipes. Cauliflower can also be made into "rice." Pulse raw cauliflower in a food processor until it resembles coarse rice. Boil the cauliflower "rice" for two to three minutes, until tender and drain. Use as a base for ground beef mixed with diced tomatoes and chilies or roast chicken with a cream sauce.
