Clinique Laboratories began operating in 1968. The New York-based company manufactures products for cosmetics, fragrance and skincare lines. Similar to all Clinique skincare sets, the Acne Solutions Clear Skin System consists of three items that allow users to follow the company's signature three-step routine while also treating and discouraging acne breakouts. The products include a cleansing foam to clean skin, a clarifying lotion to exfoliate skin and a clearing moisturizer to moisturize skin.

Acne-Fighting Ingredients

The full name of the moisturizer in the Acne Solutions set is Acne Solutions Clearing Moisturizer Oil-Free. Clinique states the product treats current acne, reduces the likelihood that acne will return and forms a barrier on your skin to repel agents that contribute to acne. The primary active ingredient in the moisturizer is a 2.5-percent concentration of benzoyl peroxide. A common drug used to clear up and prevent less-severe acne, benzoyl peroxide typically requires about four to six weeks to start having a noticeable effect on blemishes, explains the National Institutes of Health.

Individuals who apply Acne Solutions moisturizer to their skin should avoid getting the substance in their mouth, eyes and nose. Some people may develop side effects after application, too, such as dry or peeling skin, mild stinging or tingling. If you experience more serious side effects such as blisters, burning, rash or swelling, you should consult a qualified health-care professional immediately for assistance.

Moisturizing Ingredients

Although Clinique Acne Solutions moisturizer contains no oil, it helps your skin remain properly hydrated. The most abundant ingredient in the product is water, which provides skin with instant natural moisture. Another natural source of moisture, in the form of fat, is the ingredient cholesterol. Besides making your skin less dry, cholesterol helps increase the thickness of the moisturizer so it flows and spreads on better.

Additional ingredients that promote improved hydration include the humectants butylene glycol, glycerin and propylene glycol dicaprate, which help your skin absorb and preserve moisture. The silicone compounds called dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane, the fatty alcohol called myristyl alcohol and the fatty acid called linoleic acid are other emollient conditioners that lubricate the skin and prevent the evaporation of moisture.

Other Ingredients

Clinique promotes Acne Solutions Clearing Moisturizer as more than an acne treament and moisturizer. The company states the product is capable of reducing excess oil and peeling, as well. Ingredients that help achieve those goals include caffeine and the sugar-based substance called sodium hyaluronate, both of which fight peeling and make skin softer. The soothing botanical compound camellia sinensis leaf extract, alternatively known as green tea extract, soothes skin further to relieve redness and other minor inflammation.
