Sliding on roller skates or in-line skates refers to an advanced method of stopping; it looks much the same as how a hockey player stops on ice. A "parallel slide" or "power slide" is much more difficult than simply using the brake on the skates to stop. If you are not experienced, it is easy to catch a wheel or roll over on your ankles when sliding, so wear safety gear to prevent injuries.
Step 1
Skate slowly on a flat, smooth surface; then stop moving your skates, and simply coast.
Step 2
Bend your knees and pivot both skates to one side quickly. Keep your skates parallel to each other.
Step 3
Lean back to counter-balance your upper body as your skates slide sideways along the surface.
Step 4
Increase your speed as you become more proficient in the movement.
