Steve Nash, the two-time NBA MVP, has become lauded for healthy diet that keeps him in the upper echelon of NBA talent even as he approaches 40 years of age. The key says Steve Nash is, "I try to eat as much natural stuff from the earth as I can." By doing this he doesn't worry about eating special foods right before a game, as his energy levels are naturally high from the last week of proper nutrition.
Live Sugar Free
Nash says to stay away from all processed foods, including breads, pastas, and cereals. Processed foods contain lots of refined sugar, something Nash tries to avoid. Refined sugars lowers the bodies immunity, making you more prone to catching colds, something you don't want during the basketball season. Avoid all candy and soft drinks. The simple carbohydrates found in bread, pastas, rice and cereals turn into sugar once they are absorbed by the body.
Eat Whole Foods
Fill your diet with lots of whole foods such as fruits and vegetables. Add a good protein source to every meal such as fish or poultry. Eat foods as close to their natural state as possible. This means that the foods should be organic when possible, and devoid of processing and added preservatives that slowly damage the body over time.
Eat Frequent Meals
Nash believes that eating six small meals a day is better than eating three large ones. However, he realizes the difficulty that a busy schedule can wreak on meal planning. That is why Nash often carries with him his own snacks, such as a banana, pear or nuts to munch on if he gets hungry between meals. You should drink water throughout the day to keep hydrated.
Sample Meal Plan
For breakfast Nash eats a gluten and wheat free cereal, in rice or almond milk. He will also add a fruit smoothie or a piece of whole fruit such as an apple or an orange. For lunch he will eat a vegetable salad with chicken or fish. For dinner he will have either grilled or baked fish or chicken with vegetables. He might add brown rice. During the day he snacks on raw vegetables like celery or carrots, or fruits and nuts.
