Cheese is a dairy product and comes in many different forms and flavors. Several common types of cheese are cheddar, Swiss, Monterey, and cottage cheese. All varieties of cheese share certain nutritional characteristics.

Calcium

Cheese is made from milk and is rich in calcium. Calcium is a mineral that helps to build and strengthen bones and teeth.

Fat

While there are low-fat varieties, cheese usually contains a high amount of saturated fat. Fat can be used as energy and helps to build and maintain cells. Too much saturated fat can contribute to heart disease.

Calories

The Mayo Clinic lists "2 domino-sized" pieces of low-fat cheese as an acceptable snack. Calories are units of energy, which the body can either use or store.

Sodium

Sodium is essential to the body for maintaining proper fluid levels and regulating muscle contraction and relaxation. All varieties of cheese contain at least some sodium.

Protein

Cheese is a good source of protein. Protein benefits the body by assisting in muscle composition and production.
