Propo-N/Apap (Propoxyphene Napsylate and Acetaminophen) is used to treat mild to moderate pain. According to the National Library of Medicine, it can also be used to treat fever. This drug is also known as Darvocet-N, E-Lor, Genagestic or Wygesic. As with any medication, it must be taken according to the prescription, and in cooperation with your doctor. If you begin this medication, be sure to notify your doctor of any other medications you are taking.
Common, Mild Side Effects
RxList.com notes that the most common side effects for Propo-N/Apap are dizziness, fatigue and nausea or vomiting. Clinical trial participants also reported constipation, abdominal issues, skin rashes, headache, mood effects, mild disturbances in vision and hallucinations.
Serious Side Effects
Some of the most serious side effects reported have been suicide, cardiac disorders, congestive heart failure, heart arrhythmia, coma, toxicity, death and convulsions. The active components of Propo-N/Apap may also impair liver function.
Accidental or intentional overdose can lead to death or psychological and/or physical dependence. When a patient overdoses on Propo-N/Apap, they may appear sleepy, comatose or non-responsive. The person may also convulse or have trouble breathing. Their pupils may dilate, and eventually blood pressure and heart rate plummet. Other signs of overdose include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, confusion and abdominal pain. Death can occur within one hour of taking an overdose of Propo-N/Apap. Heart attack may also result. If you suspect someone has overdosed, contact your poison control center and 911 immediately.
Contraindications
Propo-N/Apap is not recommended for patients with respiratory issues (asthma or high levels of carbon dioxide in the blood). Propo-N/Apap is also not recommended for patients who have sensitivity to acetaminophen, or any patient who has been diagnosed with or suspects they may have intestinal blockages (paralytic ileus). According to RxList.com, do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking Propo-N/Apap. Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.
