Latisse is an FDA-approved prescription treatment for improving the length, thickness and color of eyelashes. According to RxList.com, the medication is said to work by affecting the growth phase of the eyelash hair cycle. In these phases, Latisse is intended to increase the length and the number of the hairs that grow at the base of the eyelid, explains Drugs.com. As with any medication, Latisse has the potential for side effects.
Common Side Effects
Drugs.com indicates that very few people have side effects when using Latisse. The most commonly occurring effects may include darkening of the eyelid skin, mild burning of the eyes, dry eyes, itching of the eyes and/or redness of the eye. These side effects may go away over time or an individual may experience the discomfort with every application.
Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects may include eye or eyelid discharge, inflammation of the eyelid, pain or irritation of the eyes and/or swelling. Drugs.com also suggests persistent or severe burning, dryness, itching and/or redness of the eyes to be severe side effects. Other symptoms may include severe or chronic eye tiredness and/or vision changes. RxList.com identifies other serious side effects to be cataract, inflammation of the cornea, tearing, eye discharge, painful over-sensitivity to light, increase in iris coloration or changes to the eye color, abnormal hair growth apart from the eyelid, inflammation of the iris, colds, infections including in the upper respiratory tract and/or weakness.

In some cases an individual may have a sensitivity or allergy to Latisse. The result can be serious if the user experiences an allergic reaction including rash, hives, itching, trouble breathing, tightness of the chest, swelling of the mouth, swelling of the lips and/or swelling of the tongue. Drugs.com explains that these side effects require immediate medical attention because the individual could go into shock or asphyxiate if the airways close from the swelling.
