Healing qigong uses universal energy called "qi," which is pronounced "chee," to promote health and longevity. By removing blockages that prevent 'qi' energy from flowing, the body will remain healthy and free from chronic conditions. As everything is energy, illness is also a type of energy that can be transformed. Meditation, breathing techniques and physical movements are all an important form of qigong exercises for health.

Qigong Breathing Exercises

Focused breathing is central to many eastern disciplines. As life begins and ends with a breath, qigong treats breathing as a vital part of healing. A beginning practice for deep breathing is to inhale deeply. Once you think your lungs are full, take three more short breaths. Slowly exhale, spending more time on exhalation than you did on inhalation. Once you feel your lungs are empty, expel three additional breaths. Start this practice slowly, with only two or three repetitions each day.

Qigong Meditation Methods

One of many types of qigong meditation is the Standing Meditation. These seven steps lead to deep relaxation that promotes tranquility and mental clarity. Begin by standing in a quiet place, with your hands by your sides. Close your eyes, and try to eliminate all thoughts. Begin by relaxing your scalp and your face. Feel the tension leave your forehead and from around your eyes. Next, relax your shoulders; allow them to move away from your ear. Your chest is next. Focus on relaxing the front of your body. You will notice that your breathing comes easier. Relax your back, then your arms and hands. Finally, let the tension run down your legs and feet, and out into the ground. This relaxation is complete in about two minutes, and you may remain in this state as long as you wish.

Qigong Postures

Ba Duan Jin is a series of eight postures that help clear and develop each body system. Performing gentle stretches and holding postures encourages the flow of qi to your internal organs. Long periods of inactivity can block the flow of qi in your body, leading to illness. Completing this gentle series of movements will work to remove blockages, get your energy flowing, and improve your health.

Completion Exercises

After enjoying your qigong session, it is important to spend some time doing the concluding exercises. This will help regulate and balance the qi that you have flowing in your body after your practice. A series of actions such as rubbing your palms together, cupping your scalp, neck rotations and kidney massages will bring your practice session to a close and increase the health benefits you receive from qigong exercises.
