Many people who use computers at work experience physical fatigue due to the strain on their eyes. Certain exercises practiced in Ayurveda, an ancient Indian form of alternative medicine, may bring relief. As with any new exercise routine, consult your doctor first to rule out any serious underlying conditions that may be the cause of your eye strain and fatigue.
Palming
Palming is one of the most effective ways to relieve eye strain, according to "Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy" by Mukunda Stiles. Close your eyes and rub your palms together briskly until they become warm. Cup your palms over the eyes, but do not touch the eyelids. Open and shut your eyes a few times, focusing on the darkness.
Eye Pillow Relaxation
Lie on your back, close your eyes and place an eye pillow over them. Relax in this position for at least five minutes. When coming out of the pose, keep the eyes closed, roll to the side and let the eye pillow naturally fall off. Practice this exercise daily, increasing duration.
Fixed Gaze
Concentrate on one object, like a candle, without blinking until your eyes begin to tear. Then close your eyes and imagine the object for as long as possible. This eye exercise is known as trataka in Ayurveda, and practicing it regularly may decrease mental lethargy, according to the director of the California College of Ayurveda, Dr. Marc Halpern.
Circles
With the eyes open, slowly circle the eyeballs as wide as possible in a clockwise motion. Rest with the eyes closed, then repeat in a counterclockwise motion. Perform this three times in each direction. Follow this up with the palming exercise.
