Shin pads are an important piece of equipment for a hockey player for both forwards and defensemen. Shin pads provide protection from pucks, sticks and the ice every time you fall down. Most of the protection on the shin pad is at the front of your legs, but most also have padding that wraps around to offer some protection in the back, too.

Step 1

Choose a pad that fits from the top of your skate to the bottom of your hockey pants.

Step 2

Sit with your leg bent and measure from the middle of your kneecap to the top eyelet of your skate. Subtract 1/2 to 1 inch from the leg measurement and match that number to a size of shin pad.

Step 3

Slip on your athletic supporter and then position your shin pads on your legs. Ensure your kneecap is in the center of the knee part of the pad. Some types of shin pads have straps with Velcro to help keep them in place, otherwise just place them securely on your leg.

Step 4

Pull your hockey socks on over the pads, and then pull your hockey pants on. Slide your skates on and tie them up, and then tape around your shin pads to help keep them in place.

Tips and Warnings

  • Let your shin pads air out and dry with the rest of your equipment after each use.
