Healthy, glowing skin and luxurious hair reflect your inner health and enhance your outer beauty. Functions of the skin include, protection against bacteria, regulation of your body temperature and connection with the external world. Your hair insulates and protects you against heat loss. Vitamins promote your over all health, increase the brilliance, shine and beauty of your hair, and encourage soft, smooth, beautiful skin. Check with your health-care practitioner for advice and guidance in choosing vitamin supplements.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin. Like vitamins D, E and K; it is stored in the liver and fatty tissues. It promotes healthy skin, mucous membranes, and soft tissue cells, lubricates the scalp and the hair follicles, and prevents dryness of the hair and scalp. Vitamin A produces an oily substance called sebum, which is secreted by the sebaceous glands in the skin. It waterproofs and smooths the skin and makes the hair shiny. Foods rich in vitamin A include spinach, kale, carrots, eggs and milk. Vitamin A is also available as a supplement.

Vitamin B

The B vitamins, like vitamin C are water soluble. These vitamins include B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B12, and folic acid. Vitamins B6, B12, biotin and folic acid are key vitamins for maintaining healthy hemoglobin levels in the blood, which carries oxygen throughout the body. These vitamins may delay the development of gray hair, prevent hair loss and maintain healthy hair and skin. Foods rich in B vitamins include, fish, meat, eggs, green leafy vegetables, wheat germ and Brewer's yeast.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants protect the skin and other body tissues from the ravages of free radicals. Vitamin C is produces collagen, which is a protein that supports and holds the connective tissues together. Without collagen the skin sags and loses its glow, softness, and smoothness. Vitamin C also prevents split ends and hair breakage and promotes luxurious, shiny hair. Sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, tomatoes, green peppers and dark leafy vegetables.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant used in many hair and skin care products because it protects cell tissues from environmental pollution, ultraviolet rays, and free radicals. Vitamin E lubricates, softens and smooths the skin, giving it a healthy glow and a youthful appearance. The antioxidants in vitamin E lubricate the scalp and hair follicles and improves blood circulation in the scalp.
