Cholesterol is a fat-like and waxy substance found in the body as well as in some food sources that helps the body to function properly; it protects the walls of the blood vessels and it also helps with hormone production. Too much cholesterol or high cholesterol is bad for the health. Cholesterol deposits called plaques can build up on the blood vessel walls, making it narrow and limiting blood flow, blood circulation and oxygenation. The use of Prilosec can have an effect on cholesterol levels.
History of Prilosec
Omeprazole is the generic name for Prilosec, a medication used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, a condition wherein there's a backflow of gastric acid from the stomach into the esophagus. Acid backflow can damage and injure the throat and esophagus. Prilosec was first introduced in the United States during the late 1980s by the drug company AstraZeneca. Aside from Prilosec, another brand name for omeprazole is Losec.
Functions of Prilosec
Prilosec is classified as a proton-pump inhibitor. These drugs act by creating a long-lasting reduction of gastric acid production. With the decrease in gastric acid in the stomach, ulcers and sores in the gastric lining are able to heal and recover. Omeprazole can either be the prescription type or the non-prescription type. Prescription omeprazole is used to treat ulcers and stomach infections. Non-prescription omeprazole is used to treat frequent heartburn that occurs at least two or more times per week.
Benefits of Prilosec
Prilosec can come as a delayed or long-acting suspension or capsule that is taken by mouth at least an hour before meals. The full benefit of this medication can be achieved approximately one to four days after ingestion. Taking Prilosec must be discontinued if the drug doesn't provide any form relief and therapeutic effect. Aside from decreasing gastric acid production, Prilosec may also lower cholesterol levels by inhibiting the amounts of cholesterol-producing enzymes. As mentioned in the American Heart Association, the body's liver and some of its cells produce about 75 percent of the blood's cholesterol, both the good cholesterol (HDL) and bad cholesterol (LDL), the remaining 25 percent comes from the diet. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have an effect on liver enzymes; Prilosec, a potent PPI, may inhibit the function of these liver enzymes.
Complications of Prilosec
According to Medline Plus, omeprazole might cause several side effects such as stomach pain, gas production, nausea and vomiting. Serious hypersensitivity reactions such as hives, swelling and difficulty breathing or swallowing can happen to patients who are allergic. Long-term use of omeprazole can eventually weaken the stomach lining. The use of ompeprazole can increase the risk for fractures in patients age 50 and above.
