Is Whole Grain Oatmeal Healthy for Your Heart?

Oatmeal has gained a reputation for being a heart healthy dish, and many qualities make it so. Oatmeal is a wholesome, low-calorie food that is rich in fiber, whole grain oats, and some antioxidants and vitamins. Consumed regularly, oatmeal may be able to help you lower cholesterol, stabilize blood glucose levels and maintain a healthy weight.

Heart Health

Many physiological factors affect the condition of your heart. Diet, exercise habits, smoking, genetics and environmental factors all play a role in the health of your cardiovascular system. Other physical conditions also contribute to heart health, such as cholesterol levels, blood glucose levels and overall caloric intake. Heavy consumption of refined carbohydrates and added sugars causes a blood glucose roller coaster, which can lead to obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. All of these conditions increase your risk factors for developing heart complications. The fiber in oatmeal helps to stabilize blood sugar levels, thus reducing your risk of heart disease.

Calories

Just as important as the amount of added sugars you consume is the amount of overall calories consumed. Consuming more calories than you expend, over time, can lead to obesity, diabetes and a host of other health problems. Obesity and diabetes can lead to heart disease. Oatmeal is a low-calorie food, with about 150 calories per serving. The health benefits of consuming oatmeal are clear and proven, and with only 150 calories per serving, it can also help you lose weight when consumed as part of a balanced low-calorie diet.
