Vaginal dryness is a common occurrence, especially in menopausal women who have lower levels of estrogen and progesterone (hormones that lead to vaginal fluid production). Menopause, smoking and certain medications are just a few things that can cause vaginal dryness. Symptoms of vaginal dryness include itching, burning and pain with sexual intercourse. There are specific steps to treat vaginal dryness.
Step 1
Vaginal lubricants can be applied prior to sexual intercourse. Vaginal moisturizers can be used to treat vaginal dryness for three days with one application, according to the Mayo Clinic. Read the package insert and use the lubricant or moisturizer as directed.
Step 2
Obtain a prescription for vaginal estrogen cream, a vaginal estrogen ring or vaginal estrogen tablet. According to the Mayo Clinic, the vaginal estrogen cream is inserted into your vagina at bedtime daily. Use as your doctor prescribes. The vaginal estrogen ring is a soft ring placed into your vagina to release a preset estrogen dose. You must change the ring every three months. The vaginal estrogen tablet is placed into your vagina daily. Discuss with your doctor which treatment is best for your vaginal dryness.
Step 3
Avoid products that may increase vaginal dryness. For example, avoid soaps, bubble baths and douches.
