Lead Water Aerobics Classes

As a water aerobics instructor, your chief responsibility is to lead others through a workout that is challenging, yet appropriate for the age and fitness level of your participants. Your class should include a stretching period, aerobics section, cool-down and more stretching. During this session, you are expected to motivate individual exercisers and demonstrate moves to participants. You also should look for and correct any instances where your participants may not be safely performing routines.

Obtain Certifications

Your employer might require that you obtain a certification to become a fitness instructor. Certifying organizations include the American Council on Exercise, the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, the United States Water Fitness Association and the International Fitness Association. Many certifications can be obtained online and involve studying important elements of water aerobics instructing, including common injuries, physiology and safe exercise techniques. In addition, you will likely be required to be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid, common certifications needed for pool workers. Because these certifications expire every one to two years, stay current on your certifications and seek recertification whenever necessary.

Monitor Pool Conditions/Equipment

As a water aerobics instructor, you should have a good working knowledge about how to maintain pool chemicals and temperature. Before a water-aerobics session, check the pool's temperature, ensuring it is not too hot or cold for safe exercise. You also might check chemical levels to ensure the pool provides a sanitary environment. You also should regularly check any fitness equipment you might use during a class to ensure no equipment is broken, chipped or unusable.

Recordkeeping

Administrative duties likely will be associated with teaching a water-aerobics class. These include recording and reporting the number of students in each class and creating schedules for your classes. Most water aerobics instructors are part-time employees, meaning your schedule may be subject to change if you have outside employment. Maintaining constant, open contact with administrators is important to keeping a schedule that is beneficial to you and your employer.
