The Total Gym and the Total Body Works 5000 are similar exercise machines. They look and function in similar manners. You can do a lot of the same exercises on each machine. However, the Total Gym and Total Body Works do have different features and specifications that set them apart.
Identification
The Total Gym and Total Body Works 5000 are in-home exercise machines that offer both strength and flexibility training. The Total Gym is a series of exercise machines. As of January 2011, three in-home models, the XLS, 3000 and 2000, are available in the Total Gym product line, each with slightly different features. The Total Body Works 5000 is manufactured by Weider Fitness and is a stand-alone product, not part of a series.
Function
Both workout machines utilize your body weight as the main form of resistance. You incline or decline the exercise board to adjust the resistance for any given exercise. The Weider Total Body Works 5000 includes four adjustable power bands so you can increase the weight, up to 50 lbs. more, beyond your own bodyweight. You can do many of the same exercises with each machine, including rows, chest presses, triceps extensions, squats and bicep curls.
Specifications
The Total Body Works 5000 is 71 inches long, 26.5 inches wide, 49.5 inches tall and has a weight capacity of 250 lbs. You can do over 50 different exercises on the Total Body Works 5000. The machine comes with a squat stand and nylon strap handles.
The Total Gym is 90 inches long, 19 inches wide and 43 inches tall. The weight capacity is 250, 400 or 400 lbs., depending on the model. You can do over 40 exercises on the basic model, over 60 on the midrange model and over 80 on the high-end model. The basic 2000 model doesn't come with any accessories. The other models have a squat stand and wing attachment.
Cost
The Weider Total Body Works 5000 is more affordable than any of the Total Gym machines. It sells for $149 on the Weider website, as of January 2011. The Total Gym 2000 sells for $600. The mid-level model, the 3000, sells for $849 and the XLS, the high-end model, sells for $876.
