If you've been trying to lose weight unsuccessfully, you may not have been eating the right foods. By changing your diet to include healthy foods and beverages, you should be able to drop at least 10 lb. safely.
Choose Healthy Foods
Step 1
Use a BMI calculator to calculate the caloric needs for your goal weight (10 lb. below your current weight). This is your target calorie count to achieve a 10 lb. weight loss.
Step 2
Substitute lower-calorie options whenever possible. For example, 1 oz. of pork sausage has 95 calories, while 1 oz. of turkey sausage has 55 calories.
Step 3
Choose lean protein sources, such as skinless chicken breast, ground turkey and fish. Stay away from fatty breakfast meats like bacon and pork sausage, or switch to low-fat options.
Step 4
Stick to low-fat dairy products, like skim or 1 percent milk. Most brands of cheese now offer low-fat or fat-free options, as well.
Step 5
Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. When you crave something sweet, choose a healthy snack like a banana or apple slices with peanut butter.
Step 6
Eat whole grains and complex carbohydrates whenever possible. Avoid processed grain products made with white flour.
Avoid Caloric Beverages
Step 1
Avoid drinking sweetened beverages like soda, sweetened tea and fruit juice. A 20 oz. bottle of soda contains 175 calories, while a bottle of Crystal Light has around 5 calories.
Step 2
Drink around 64 oz. of water or other noncaloric beverages per day. Staying properly hydrated will reduce hunger pains and help you to feel satisfied.
Step 3
Remember that sweetened drinks can up your calorie count quickly, sabotaging your weight-loss goals.
