Endometriosis occurs when the tissue lining your uterus grows somewhere else in your body, such as your ovaries, intestines or bladder. This condition can cause pain, heavy periods and infertility. Natural treatments, including herbal medicines, may help treat your endometriosis. However, always discuss the risks and benefits of any treatment option with your doctor first.

Endometriosis Information

According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, endometriosis is one of the leading gynecological diseases among women, affecting more than 5.5 million North Americans. Some of the most common signs and symptoms of endometriosis include painful cramps or periods, unusually heavy periods, lower back and pelvic pain, infertility and dyspareunia, or pain during intercourse. The Institute states that between 30 and 40 percent of women with this condition are infertile.

Herbal Treatments

In her book "Herbal Medicine from the Heart of the Earth," expert herbalist and naturopathic doctor Sharol Tilgner states that certain herbs are helpful in treating cysts, fibroids and endometriosis, including chaste tree, burdock, dong quai, calendula, red root and cleavers. Other herbs that may help treat endometriosis include myrrh gum, astragalus, nettle, raspberry leaf, goldenseal, alfalfa, garlic and pau d'arco. Some of these herbs have antibiotic action and help balance your hormones.

A Commonly Used Herb

Astragalus is a commonly used herb for endometriosis. Astragalus helps protect your immune system, supports the functions of your adrenal glands and aids your digestion. This herb has been used to treat endometriosis and problems associated with immune deficiency, including AIDS, cancer and tumors. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that the root of the astragalus plant contains most of its medicinal properties and is used in soups, teas, liquid extracts or capsules. Tilgner suggests taking 10 to 60 drops of the plant liquid extract in a little water one to four times per day.

Another Effective Herb

According to certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," dong quai may be an effective herbal treatment for endometriosis. Dong quai helps balance your hormones and strengthens your reproductive system. This herb has mild sedative, laxative, diuretic and antispasmodic actions. Dong quai also helps relieve pain and assists your body in using hormones. Dong quai has been used to treat vaginal dryness, menopausal symptoms and premenstrual syndrome.
