Working as a Pilates instructor can vary, based on the type of facility you choose for employment. Before training for a new career as a Pilates instructor, research what the job entails at prospective employers in your area. Smaller cities may have fewer options; larger cities may have more competition for the jobs with the best pay and perks.

Responsibilities

Pilates instructors may teach groups or individuals and can focus on mat or machine exercises. Different employers may use different models of Pilates machines. Some may offer training on the complete system, including the reformer, Cadillac, chairs and accessory items, and others may only offer training on select machines. Some health clubs may require you to perform floor hours, where you are available to answer general questions from members. Pilates studios and health clubs often ask staff to work at open-house programs to help draw interest to session purchases.

Education

Pilates studios often focus on a specific teaching style, like Stott Pilates or classical Pilates, and may require a certification from a specific school. Studios are also more likely to require a comprehensive certification in all the Pilates machines. Some health clubs, like Club Sport in Tigard, Oregon, offer Pilates mat classes in large group exercise studios, and small group and private training in a separate Pilates studio within the club. Trainers here can carry certification in mat, reformer or comprehensive Pilates. This setup can make it easier for you to make a living while you are completing a comprehensive Pilates certification.

Hours

Since Pilates training requires clients, most locations look for availability during evenings and weekends, though you may teach at other times as well. If you choose to train at an employer-based fitness facility, the bulk of your work hours might fall during lunchtime or just before or after the workday. Health clubs, like Club Sport, often require availability for substitute teaching.

Compensation

Pilates mat teachers are usually paid a flat rate per class. Training on Pilates machines is usually commission-based, with a portion of the fee going to the studio owner or club. Rates vary widely based on location and the number of Pilates teachers in your market. Club Sport offers perks like child care, 401k participation, disability insurance, health insurance, club membership and discounts on food and apparel. Studios are often smaller businesses, but may offer some or all of the same benefits as a larger health club.
