5 Things You Need to Know About Buying Workout Clothes

1. Opt for Breathable Blends

When thinking of buying workout clothes, look for material that can wick, or draw away, moisture from your skin. The ability for clothes to wick moisture is most important for those moderate to intense workouts in which you sweat a lot, as evaporating sweat is what cools down your body. Synthetic blends are a popular choice for their ability to "breathe." Get rid of the 100% cotton shirts and shorts, which retain moisture against your skin and look for clothes made from polyester, spandex or nylon.

2. No Pinching Allowed

Look for clothes that are comfortable and allow a free range of motion. Avoid clothes that pinch or are overly restrictive. While both men and women should wear supportive clothes during a workout, you also don't want to be concerned with uncomfortable straps or clothes that chafe under the armpits or inner thigh areas. Likewise, your clothes should not be so bulky that they get in the way of your workout.

3. Look Good, Feel Good

Consider comfort and style, not just function. People want to look good when they exercise, especially when at the gym. Instead of wearing oversized shirts and shorts, more women are opting for colorful, transitional pieces that they can wear during exercising as well as running errands around town. You can find stylish workout clothes at most athletic stores that include hooded jackets, running skirts and flared pants.

4. Step Up Your Game

You'll need to buy footwear designed for your specific sport, so be sure to ask for recommendations from someone who is knowledgeable about different types of shoes. Cross-training shoes are a popular choice for a wide range of activities, but those who run, shoot hoops or swing a racquet need to select shoes that offer the best cushion and traction for their game. Make sure a professional fits the shoe properly to prevent common foot injuries. Before you slip on your shoes, however, look for a fitted sock that is cushioned enough to protect your foot against blisters, but not so bulky so that it interferes with the fit of your shoe.

5. Safety First

Safety should always be an issue when purchasing workout clothes. Anytime you run or bike outside, wear bright, reflective clothing. Invest in safety gear, such as helmets, knee pads and elbow pads. Choose a waterproof jacket made of Gore-Tex if there is a threat of getting wet. It's especially important to stay safe and warm during the winter, so wear layers of clothes made from synthetic blends and don't forget a hat and mittens to help retain your body heat.
