Kidney failure is a condition in which your kidneys are no longer capable of filtering harmful materials and waste products from your blood. The National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse states that properly functioning kidneys support the health of your bones and blood. There are two types of kidney failure: acute and chronic. Herbal supplements are a commonly used treatment for kidney failure, although there are many other treatments that may produce beneficial health effects. Consult a doctor before using herbs to treat a health condition.

Kidney Failure Information

Acute kidney failure is usually caused by kidney injury, and it is associated with a rapid decline in kidney function and reduced urine output. Chronic kidney failure is often caused by chronic kidney disease. Chronic kidney failure develops over time, and most people with this condition exhibit few symptoms. In some cases, chronic kidney disease is the end result of a long-term illness. MedlinePlus notes that with the appropriate treatment and support, many people who suffer kidney failure can live full and balanced lives.

Herbal Supplements

In her book "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," naturopathic physician and master herbalist Sharol Tilgner states that certain herbal supplements help improve the health and function of the kidneys. These herbs include rhubarb, ginseng and gingko. Other herbs that may be beneficial for treating kidney failure include sage, celery seeds, astragalus, buchu, corn silk, cranberries and juniper. Hydrangea and bearberry -- both of which are natural diuretics -- may also be helpful.

Highlighted Herb

Hydrangea is an herbal supplement often prescribed for kidney failure and many other health conditions. According to certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," hydrangea stimulates the kidneys and is helpful for treating bladder infections, kidney disease, obesity and prostate disorders. When hydrangea is combined with gravel root, it may be effective for treating kidney stones. Hydrangea contains several important substances, including quercetin, saponin, calcium, iron, selenium and zinc.

Warning

Some herbs should be avoided or used only under the supervision of a qualified health care provider. Various parts of plants are used in herbal preparations while other parts may be toxic. The leaves of the hydrangea plant, for example, should never be consumed, as they contain cyanide and can be injurious to your health. An herbalist, naturopathic physician or medical doctor trained in botanical medicine can provide information about herb safety and effectiveness.
