Movement occurs from the upper and lower portions of the main abdominal muscle, the rectus abdominis, in the standard, seated position. To work the oblique muscles, position yourself sideways on the bench. This bench improves both strength and endurance in the abdomen.
Features
The seat on the Best Fitness semi recumbent incline ab bench has three positions to work your abs. Perform crunches from 45, 50 or 55 degree angles. The seat also features full back support, which minimizes strain on the back, neck and shoulder muscles. The foot bar has two adjustments in order to fit different leg lengths. The upper and lower portions of the bench are controlled independently to isolate either part of your rectus abdominis.
Construction
All moving parts on the semi recumbent ab bench are spring-locked, promoting safety and ease of movement. The pins and bolts are also optimized for safety, whether you choose to keep settings adjustable or make them permanent. One color scheme is available; gray powder coded finish with black upholstery and black handles. The upholstery covers the shoulder pad and seat and is 1.75 inches thick. The handles are covered with a textured grip aid.
Exercises
You can do six exercises from two positions using this bench. Crunches from the upper abs, leg raises from the lower abs and the two together in a combination crunch are options from the forward-facing seated position. You can also sit facing the side, with one foot on the foot bar, holding one handle. The crunch, leg raise and combination crunch are done on each side to work the oblique muscles along the waist line.
Intensity of Exercies
As with any abdominal workout, you get what you put into it. If you are mentally connected to your workout, you will be successful. There is a limitation with this particular bench, however. This model is made for home use and there is no way to increase the weight. Body Solid does make a commercial version, model number GAB 300, where Olympic style plates are an optional addition when you want to increase the workload.
Cost
The suggested retail price for the Best Fitness BF AB20 is $285 and includes a three-year manufacturer's warranty. As of February 2011, however, the average price from online fitness retailers was under $240. The commercial model, the Body Solid GAB 300, has a suggested retail price of $405 and an average price online of $299.99.
