Salmeterol Side Effects

Salmeterol is a medication that is sometimes used to treat asthma. It is commonly inhaled and relaxes the smooth muscles around the airway, making it easier for asthmatics to breathe. It activates parts of the muscle cells called beta-receptors, which control muscle relaxation. Salmeterol is used for long-term control of asthma and cannot be used to stop an attack that is already occurring. Because it needs to be taken regularly, it can also cause certain adverse effects.

Common Side Effects

Although uncomfortable, these side effects only warrant you to stop taking salmeterol and contact your doctor if they persist for a long time or are too much to bear. These include a mild headache or sinus and nasal congestion, which may be a result of salmeterol causing the muscles around small blood vessels to relax. Salmeterol can also cause tremors, a stuffy nose or throat irritation (leading to a sore throat or hoarseness). In some cases it can also cause nervousness. These side effects should go away over time and only require medical attention if they become severe.

Allergic Effects

In some cases it can cause an allergic reaction, which are serious because salmeterol is inhaled. An allergic reaction could close off the airway and make it difficult to breathe, which is especially problematic for asthma sufferers. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to salmeterol include a rash or hives, itching or difficulty breathing and sudden hoarseness. Other symptoms may include swelling of the lips, face and mouth, tightness in your chest, an irregular or rapid heartbeat, fever and a severe headache. If you experience these symptoms stop using salmeterol immediately and call your doctor.

Other Serious Side Effects

Because salmeterol causes relaxation of smooth muscle, it can also affect the cardiovascular system. This means that it can cause heart problems, especially in high doses. Drugs.com also indicates that heart problems are more common when salmeterol is used by the elderly. In some cases salmeterol can also cause dizziness as it causes relaxation of the blood vessels leading to the brain. Drugs.com also indicates that it can increase your blood glucose levels. In order to prevent salmeterol from interacting with other drugs you are taking, make sure you tell your doctor about your medications (including over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements).
