Snacks are often seen as a bad behavior. The opposite is true if you pack healthy and nutritious snacks because they can provide extra energy for exercise or help sustain energy until you eat a meal. Choosing healthy snacks between meals can also prevent overeating by reducing hunger at mealtimes.

Popcorn

The American Dietetic Association recommends popcorn as one of the top choices for a low calorie carbohydrate snack. Try air popped popcorn, low-fat microwave popcorn, or a popcorn made with light oil. You can season popcorn with lemon, garlic salt, or low-calorie popcorn seasoning to save calories and add flavor.

Low-Fat Dairy

Low-fat cheese, yogurt and other dairy products are good sources of calcium and protein, which make them top choices as snacks to pack in your lunch. Low-fat dairy products also contain vitamins and minerals, which add a nutrition boost. Make sure to read nutrition labels to choose low-fat and low-sugar options that also contain more than 4 or 5 g of protein.

Fruit

Fruit is an easy and convenient option as a snack to pack in your lunch. It is high in fiber, which will leave you filling full. It also contains vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Try pairing fruit with a protein to help stabilize your blood sugar levels. For example, try an apple with sliced low fat cheese, or a banana with peanut butter. If you're busy, pick a fruit that has a peel and is easy to pack like oranges, grapes, and bananas.

Vegetables

Vegetables can be a healthy, low-fat and filling snack. In addition to containing vitamins and mineral, vegetables are easy to pack, and can lead to weight loss because of their low-calorie content. To add flavor, pack vegetables with seasoning, dressing, or a protein. For example try celery with peanut butter, carrots with low-fat salad dressing or hummus, and sliced peppers and tomatoes topped with low-fat cheese.
