Hockey socks refer to the sleeve of material that cover your shin pads when you are in full hockey gear. Socks are typically the same color as your jersey, and teams typically have different colored socks to match both home and away jerseys. It is customary to tape around your hockey socks to help keep your shin pads in place while you play. Clear tape will keep the colors of your socks visible, but any flexible tape will get the job done.

Step 1

Wrap the tape around your leg about two or three times on the outside of your hockey socks, just below the kneecap. Ensure your shin pad is securely on your leg before you wrap the tape.

Step 2

Wrap a new section of tape two or three times around your sock about an inch or two above the top of your skate.

Step 3

Wrap another section of tape around your ankle where your skates and shin pads meet if you would like a little extra ankle support. Wrap it three to four times, so that your ankle still has room to bend so your skating won't be hindered.

Tips and Warnings

  • Experiment with different types and amounts of tape until you find a combination that is comfortable for you.
  • Don't wrap tape around your socks too tightly or you will cut off circulation.

Things You'll Need

  • Clear flexible hockey tape; 1-inch thick
