Your kidneys remove waste products as well as excess acidic and alkaline substances via the urine. The balance of acidic and alkaline chemicals in the urine can be measured by the urine's pH; the higher the pH, the more alkaline substances are in the urine. Increasing the pH of your urine may help you get rid of urinary tract infections, the Urology Channel explains, because bacteria have trouble staying in the urinary tract in the presence of alkaline urine. You may also alkalize your urine to treat other conditions, such as cystinuria. To avoid medical complications, see your doctor for a proper diagnosis, if you suspect you may be suffering from cystinuria or a urinary tract infection.
Step 1
Reduce your protein intake. Dietary protein is broken down to form acidic substances, the Cystinuria Support Network explains. When your body gets more acid from the food you eat, it has to excrete the excess acid in the urine, which lowers the pH.
Step 2
Increase your consumption of vegetables, citrus fruits and dairy products. These foods can all alkalize your urine, MedLinePlus reports.
Step 3
Take supplements which contain citrates. Citrates naturally cause an increase in the pH of your urine, the Urology Channel explains. Potassium citrate, calcium citrate, magnesium citrate and sodium citrate are all commonly used compounds that contain citrate. Do not take these supplements before bedtime as they can irritate your bladder.
