Individuals have been practicing yoga for more than 5,000 years. Yoga is built on the ideas of exercise, breathing and mediation and focuses on a mind-body connection. Yoga is a suitable activity for individuals of all ages and physical activity levels. Yoga can also be modified to meet the needs of individuals with injuries and health concerns. Yoga can involve special socks and gloves, balls and straps. Perhaps one of the most important pieces of equipment you will need if you decide to participate in yoga is a yoga mat.

Step 1

Invest in a yoga mat to your liking. There are a wide variety of textures, sizes and materials that yoga mats can be made of. Some mats are even eco-friendly. Other mats come in extra-long length if you are taller than an average height. Yoga mats can range in prices from $5 -- if bought in a discount store -- to about $40, as of February 2011.

Step 2

Unroll your yoga mat. Since a majority of yoga mats come rolled up, it is good idea to take them out of their packaging prior to use. Place a few heavy books on each end and leave them there overnight. This will prevent the corners of your mat from rolling up the first time you decide to use your mat for a yoga class.

Step 3

Roll your yoga mat up and carry it to class with you. Unroll your mat once you get to class. Place it long ways across the floor. Make sure to leave a couple of feet between you and the next individual in your class.

Step 4

Participate in your class. The yoga mat can help ease the pain felt from a wooden or cement floor. Your mat can take the stress off your joints allowing you to participate in your yoga class with ease.

Step 5

Roll your mat back up and carry it home. You can invest in a yoga sling or strap to make carrying your mat easier.

Step 6

Clean your mat. Use warm, soapy water to clean your mat off. Let it dry and then roll it back up for your next use.

Tips and Warnings

  • A majority of yoga instructors will recommend that you invest in a thick, nonskid mat. Most mats are 24 inches by 68 inches and one-eighth of an inch in thickness. These mats can be purchased in sporting good stores, online or in big-box retail stores. Before disposing of the packaging, read the instructions. Some yoga mats can be placed in a washing machine for cleaning.
  • To avoid possibly contracting a foot infection, don't share your yoga mat.
