How to Hike the Linville Gorge

The Linville Gorge in North Carolina is a popular destination for hikers, climbers and those who love the outdoors. Located within Pisgah National Forest, the gorge area is diverse and rugged, and there are a wide variety of hikes to choose from, many of which take you to the Linville River for fishing, camping or swimming. Other routes follow the cliffs with fantastic views of the river valley. The east and west ridges offer many small canyons for adventurous hikers to explore. The gorge contains small creeks, rivers, rock walls and waterfalls offering stunning beauty and unique opportunities.

Step 1

Put together a list of essential supplies. Your ability level and physical condition will determine the type of hikes you choose. Choose your supplies accordingly and pack only what you need for short day hikes. Bring along additional supplies like tents, cookware and food for extended hikes.

Step 2

Establish a base camp. The Linville Gorge Wilderness is an expansive area that offers a wide variety of hikes. You will need to spend some time in this area to truly appreciate all that it offers. There are several campgrounds, motels and bed and breakfasts in the area that provide a home base after a long day on the trail.

Step 3

Obtain a permit from the ranger office in Nebo, North Carolina if you plan on hiking deep into the wilderness and staying there overnight. Permits are required on the weekends as well as on national holidays. Securing a permit is simple and free, but failure to do so could result in a fine.

Step 4

Obtain a map of the area and lay out your desired routes. USGS topographic maps are a useful resource and should be carried along on the trail. National Geographic also offers an excellent waterproof Linville Gorge and Mount Mitchell trail map. Both maps are available online and in stores.

Step 5

Choose a route to hike. Many of the hikes around the Linville Gorge offer opportunities to enjoy other activities along the way. Select a river hike if you enjoy fishing and swimming. Hikes along the canyon rim offer excellent views perfect for photography and climbing opportunities for adventurous individuals.

Tips and Warnings

  • While your in the area make sure to visit Linville Falls. The falls are a beautiful example of the rugged terrain and spectacular scenery in the area. If you are an inexperienced hiker or would like to enjoy an extended backpacking trip into the wilderness, consider hiring a guide to help you along the way and point out interesting landmarks.
  • Be aware of wild animals and always store food in a bear-proof container. Black bears are common in and around the gorge and precautions should be taken to avoid conflict. Hiking in extreme conditions during hot summer days or the cold winter months requires additional preparation. If you choose to take in the scenery on a hot summer day, be aware of the risks of dehydration and heat exhaustion. Consider packing a pair of snow shoes if you plan to do any winter hiking and pack extra clothing to stay warm.
