1. A Skin Condition With Many Causes
Dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin. There are several types of dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is one of the most common types and sometimes it is referred to as eczema and can occur anywhere on the body. Contact dermatitis is caused by your skin coming in contact with an irritant such as a detergent. A rash around the mouth which is associated with rosacea is known as perioral dermatitis.
2. Reduce Your Chances of Developing Dermatitis
Some forms of dermatitis such as atopic tend to run in families. However there are things you can do to prevent dermatitis from developing. Determine your allergens from past outbreaks and avoid them. Common allergens are soap, detergents, perfumes and wool. Avoid drying out the skin which can lead to dermatitis especially if you are prone to it. Take a bath or shower every other day instead of daily or keep your showers brief. Use a fragrance free moisturizer on the skin to prevent dryness.
3. More Than Itchy Skin
Symptoms may vary slightly depending on the type of dermatitis you have. Most forms of dermatitis will cause redness to the skin and itching. There may also be some oozing. Swelling of the skin may occur. Blisters, skin lesions and scabbing can also occur. The severity of symptoms varies. Symptoms may last only a few hours or can be chronic and continue for weeks.
4. Soothe Your Skin at Home
Dermatitis can usually be treated at home. Use calamine lotion on areas of the skin which are effected to alleviate itching. Hydrocortisone cream can also be bought over the counter and may reduce symptoms. Take a lukewarm bath and put some baking soda in the tub which may soothe the skin. Cool compresses can also be placed on the skin which may help reduce redness and swelling. Avoid scratching, which will irritate the skin further.
5. When Dermatitis is Getting Under Your Skin
Dermatitis is not a life threatening condition however it can be uncomfortable and interfere with daily activities. If you are having trouble sleeping or doing everyday things because of itching see a doctor. You may need medication such as steroidal creams or antibiotic ointments prescribed. Some forms of dermatitis such as perioral may require oral antibiotics. If your skin hurts, is bleeding or you think it may be infected you should also call the doctor.
