While many different diet plans exist, you must maintain a commitment to losing weight if you want to stay thin. A recommended eating plan will include all of the major food groups, while focusing on portion control. You can achieve dramatic weight loss if you eat foods with fewer calories and control your portions size when consuming foods with a high energy density.

Foods to Eat

Some dieters struggle when determining which foods they should eat on a daily basis. Fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, lean cuts of beef, fish, poultry and legumes should make their way into your eating plan. These foods have a low energy density, so you can eat fill yourself up without putting too many calories into your body. The way that you prepare these foods will also factor into their energy density, so avoid rich sauces and breading when you cook them.

Serving Size

Many people struggle with serving sizes because they do not realize that even a small package can contain more than one serving. The proper serving of rice or pasta should be a similar size as half of a baseball, while a serving of cheese would be a similar size as four dice stacked on top of each other. Keeping a food journal will help you to control your portion sizes, as you can write down how much you have consumed at each meal.

Eating Habits

Your eating methods can influence your weight greatly, especially if you find yourself eating when you have nothing else to do or eating too quickly. We all develop good habits, such as always eating breakfast, and bad habits, such as always clearing off the plate and these habits effect a diet. Always eating breakfast will provide you with an energy boost in the morning and will prevent unnecessary snacking, while always finishing off your plate means that you probably eat after you have already satisfied your hunger.

Myths

Not everything that you hear in the media leads to dramatic long-term weight loss, as many diets aim at short-term success. Some dieters avoid starches because of what they have heard, but these foods, such as pasta, bread and rice, do not contain many unnecessary calories unless you cover them with a high-fat topping. Also, just because something says that it does not contain fat does not mean that it does not contain calories. The Weight-control Information Network reports that many low-fat versions of products have just as many calories as the regular product.
