General Diet Food Plan to Follow

A healthy diet is necessary no matter what your lifestyle goals. The foods you put in your body are a direct reflection of the way your body looks and feels. Food fuels the body with energy and with nutrients. Understanding what foods you should eat will help you create your best diet.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are necessary in your diet no matter what you health goals are. These foods contain essential vitamins and minerals that help the body function to its best potential. According to the American Heart Association, it is recommended to get four and half cups of these foods a day. Fresh fruits and vegetables are the healthiest ways to consume these foods. Canned and frozen fruits and vegetables do not have the small health benefits. Snacking on fruits and adding a vegetable to your dinner ensures you get the necessary amounts in your diet.

Whole Grains

Whole grains should be in all diet because of their vital nutrients like B vitamins, folate, iron and magnesium. Whole grains contain fiber which helps to regulate the digestive system and creates a feeling of fullness. According to the United States Department of Agriculture it is recommended to consume 3 oz. a day or 25g. Eating whole wheat crackers, pastas, breads and even cereals ensures you get the recommended amounts each day.

Watch Your Fats

There are good fats and bad fats. Saturated fats, which are found in animal products and trans fats, which are found in processed foods and fast foods, are the unhealthy kinds of fats. Saturated fats should be less than seven percent of your calories and less than one percent should come from trans fats. Monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are the healthy kinds of fats that are needed in your diet. These fats can be found in fish, avocados, nuts and olive oil. Cooking with olive oil and snacking on nuts is a healthy way to add in these fats.

Protein

Protein is needed in all diets because it helps build and repair muscle as well as energize the body. Choosing lean protein sources is the healthiest option to ensure you are getting your calories from protein and not too much fat. Lean meats like chicken, turkey and fish are a healthy choice. Protein is also found in nuts, cheese, yogurt and beans. Adding these foods into your meals and snacks helps ensure your diet is filled with protein.
