Herbs and spices have been used for centuries as a way to flavor food and treat symptoms of medical conditions. Spices include dried fruits, seeds, roots and bark whereas herbs are plants with special flavors and medicinal properties. Learning about the health benefits of spices and herbs allows consumers to use these naturally flavorful products for maximum benefit.

Salt-Free Seasoning

While sodium is vital for good health, it is usually too abundant in the typical Western diet. Excess sodium consumption can lead to high blood pressure, which increases the risk for heart attack and stroke. Table salt is the main source of sodium in the diet. To reduce your daily intake of sodium add herbs and spices to foods in place of salt. Seasonings like ginger, cinnamon and clove go great with sweet foods, while zesty spices such as cayenne and turmeric add extra flavor to Mexican, Thai and Indian dishes.

Medicinal Properties

Many herbs and spices have unique healing properties. Ginger root may be helpful for alleviating inflammatory pain and nausea caused by chemotherapy, motion sickness and pregnancy. The herb St. John's Wort is a widely used alternative to prescription antidepressants in many parts of the world such as Germany. The American Academy of Family Physicians states that St. John's Wort is a safe and effective option for short-term treatment of mild to moderate depression. Other herbs and spices with medicinal effects include turmeric, garlic, fennel and peppermint.

Caffeine Substitute

Herbal teas are a flavorful alternative to regular tea, coffee, soda and other caffeinated beverages. While not generally considered harmful, excessive caffeine intake can lead to dependence and side effects like nervousness and insomnia, leading many users to reduce their intake of the substance. Virtually any herb or spice can be brewed into a tea. Some of the most common blends include ginger, peppermint, chamomile, vanilla and hops. Roasted dandelion root is a widely used coffee substitute with a similar flavor and aroma. To make an herbal tea, simply add hot water to the herbs and spices of your choice, steep and strain.

Safety Considerations

When taken in therapeutic doses, some herbs and spices can cause side effects and drug interactions. To reduce the risk of adverse effects, ask your doctor before adding an herbal supplement to your diet.
