A March 2010 study at Scripps Research Institute found that sugary foods have many of the same addictive qualities as illegal drugs, such as heroin and cocaine. When you eat junk food, the pleasure centers in the brain become overloaded and more and more of the food is required to sustain the feeling. Eliminating junk food from the diet can help you eat a more nutritionally balanced diet.

Cheesecake

During the March 2010 study at Scripps Research Institute, rats were fed cheesecake, frosting and bacon to gauge weight gain and dopamine responses. The rats quickly became obese when following the diet and addiction to the food set in. To maintain the pleasurable sensations from eating the cheesecake and other foods, portions had to be increased.

Doughnuts

Doughnuts are not only high in fat, but also high in sugar. When you eat the combination, your brain is sending out a reward message. The good feelings associated with eating the doughnuts increase your chances of indulging in the sweet and fatty treat often. Since a doughnut may have approximately 300 calories and 20 g of fat, you should find healthier alternatives, such as sugar-free doughnuts and mini whole grain muffins.

Chocolate Candies

Pieces of chocolate increase your blood sugar level and can stimulate your appetite. A 2009 study found that participants who had visible and easy access to chocolate were more likely to indulge in the sweets. If you do feel the urge to eat chocolate, reach for a small piece of dark chocolate instead.

Chips

Instead of sugar addiction, you may crave salty snacks. Once you start in on a bag of chips, you may keep eating until it is finished. Bags of chips are high in calories, fat and salt. If you find it hard to steer clear of chips altogether, choose healthier versions with reduced salt and fat intakes.
