Karate is a centuries-old martial art that began in Okinawa, Japan. After World War II, karate became an internationally popular martial art and sport. Learning karate is not only an application in self defense, but an adherence to a philosophy of pacifism and respect for others. The symbol of students who have mastered the techniques and ideals of karate is the black belt. Earning a black belt takes years of dedicated practice.

Step 1

Enroll in an karate school, preferably one that is accredited or backed by a local or state karate association. There are several styles of karate to choose from, and each one offers distinct advantages. Usually, each karate dojo will specialize in one style.

Step 2

Learn the techniques, or katas as they are commonly called, of each level leading up to black belt, then pass the necessary examinations to advance. Levels decrease as you improve and are denoted as kyu. All beginning students start at either 10th kyu or 9th kyu, depending on the school and style, and eventually move up to 1st kyu.

Step 3

Prepare for the 1st kyu examination, which will include an elaborate physical demonstration of techniques, etiquette and terminology. Many schools offer a precursor examination to the 1st kyu test to prepare students.

Step 4

Pass the 1st kyu examination to reach the level of black belt. This will open up a new grading system which starts at 1st dan and moves up to 10th dan. Many people will recognize these advances as "degrees" of black belt, such as a 4th degree black belt.

Tips and Warnings

  • Visit several dojos and talk to their respective "senseis" before you decide on a particular style. You may find that some styles or dojos are not suited to your preferences.
  • Karate is a highly physical activity that often requires sparring or practice fighting. Consult your doctor before enrolling in any martial arts program.
