ChicoMetrics is a workout program designed for people who do not want to participate in high-impact exercises or can't do so for medical reasons. The variety of resistance training movements in ChicoMetrics are small and controlled, with a focus on building flexibility, improving stamina and toning muscles throughout the body.
History
ChicoMetrics was developed by Dr. Chico Caldwell, a former basketball coach and director of athletics who holds a master's degree in health and human performance. Dr. Caldwell developed his specialized exercise program after spending several years studying anaerobic exercises that did not use equipment, and focusing on movements that produced positive rehabilitation results for people who had been injured or who suffered from muscle and joint pain.
Function
The program is especially well suited for people who have muscle or joint strain, arthritis, osteoporosis, prior injuries, physical discomfort or weak knees because it provides strength training benefits without weightlifting. The isometric and isotonic movements are suitable for people of all fitness levels and are very low-impact, meaning they place minimal stress on joints and muscles and carry a very low risk of injury.
Program
ChicoMetrics is well known for its efficiency. As opposed to other exercise programs that recommend 150 or more minutes of physical movement each week, the ChicoMetrics program suggests that participants can see results with only two 50-minute workout sessions per week, noting that it's not necessary to do the exercise routine more than three times weekly. However, the program's focus is on toning and on using slow, controlled muscular movements to sculpt the body; therefore, they suggest that you supplement your ChicoMetrics exercises with at least three weekly sessions of cardio.
Weight Loss
ChicoMetrics is designed to be a muscular fitness program rather than a weight loss program. Although its exercises may be effective for toning muscles, they aren't likely to burn as many calories as cardio workouts or higher-impact movements. An hour of controlled, muscle-toning exercise such as ChicoMetrics is comparable to an hour of tai chi, which burns about 300 calories. In contrast, an hour of jogging burns close to 600 calories. To achieve weight loss, the American Council on Exercise recommends that you work out for at least 45 minutes at a time on five or six days per week, which is above and beyond what the ChicoMetrics program suggests.
