While conventional cyclists prefer to keep their tires planted on the pavement, BMX bikers take a different approach. BMX tricks refer to a number of different maneuvers that often involve spinning or flipping the bicycle frame. Novice BMX bikers often utilize a training obstacle known as a foam pit. The foam pit allows you to practice new tricks without the worry of serious injury.

Bunny Hop

The bunny hop refers to the starting point for all BMX tricks. The bunny hop involves hopping vertically while lifting the tires off the ground. The bunny hop should be executed with a series of fluid motions. Pedal forward at a comfortable speed to setup for the bunny hop. "BMX Plus" magazine recommends pulling back on the handlebars while leaning back. Lift your knees to raise the back wheels. Lean forward to keep the tires parallel to the ground. Bend your knees as you land.

360 Spins

The 360 remains one of the easiest spinning tricks in BMX. Contrary to popular belief, many BMX bikers actually learn the 360 spin before the 180 spin. The 180 requires you to ride backwards for a short time and requires advanced balancing skills. While many professional riders can execute the 360 on flat ground, you may need to use a small kicker ramp. Start turning your shoulders as you perform a bunny hop. Turn your head in the direction of the 360 spin. Bend your knees as you land.

Whipping the Tail

A solid bunny hop remains necessary when learning the tail whip. The tail whip involves spinning the BMX frame 360 degrees while holding on to the handlebars. Pedal forward at a comfortable speed to set up for the tail whip. Perform a bunny hop as high as you can. As you reach the maximum height of your jump, kick the BMX pedals sideways to rotate the frame. Professional BMXer Mike Brennan recommends spinning the handlebars in a circular motion to aid in the tail whip. Catch the tail whip by aligning your feet over the BMX pedals.

Flips

Flipping remains one of the most thrilling and dangerous BMX bike tricks. Only a handful of BMX bikers have ever successfully landed a front flip. However, the back flip can be seen in most freestyle BMX contests. Practice the back flip into a foam pit to get comfortable with the motions. Compress your riding stance as you roll up the takeoff ramp. Lean back while pulling the handlebars to your chest. Keep your feet positioned over the pedals as you flip upside down. Watch the ground to spot your landing. Bend your knees to absorb the impact of the landing.
