How to Diet While on Armour Thyroid

Armour Thyroid is a prescription medication for the treatment of hypothyroidism, which is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces an inadequate amount of thyroid hormones. Some doctors and patients prefer Armour Thyroid over other hypothyroidism treatments because Armour Thyroid is a natural source of T3 derived from porcine thyroid glands, whereas other medications on the market contain chemically compounded thyroid hormones.

Hypothyroidism decreases your metabolic rate, adding to the challenge of weight loss. However, with dedication and adequate medical care, you can successfully and safely lose weight while taking Armour Thyroid.

Step 1

Consult an endocrinologist if you are not already seeing one. Endocrinologists are physicians who specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions of the endocrine system, of which the thyroid is part. Patients losing weight while taking Armour Thyroid must be closely monitored by an endocrinologist because their medication dosage might need to be adjusted as their weight decreases.

Step 2

Visit a dietitian to develop a diet plan that is suitable for your weight loss goals and will not interfere with your hypothyroidism treatment.

Step 3

Eat six small meals throughout the day as opposed to three large ones. Eating smaller, more frequent meals will keep your metabolism revved, encouraging your body to constantly burn calories. This is vitally important for someone with hypothyroidism, which slows the metabolism.

Step 4

Exercise at least 20 minutes per day, three days per week. Gradually increase the duration and frequency of your exercise sessions as you feel able. Exercise burns calories and speeds your metabolism.
