Walking and jogging are both cardiovascular exercises that burn calories and help you lose weight. Your health, level of fitness, age and body structure will largely determine which activity is the better option for a weight-loss exercise program. If you are new to exercise, consult your doctor before starting any exercise program.

A Gentle Start

Walking is a suitable form of exercise for weight loss if you are recovering from illness, new to exercise, frail or have knee or lower-back problems. If you are significantly overweight, jogging or running may place excessive stress on your joints and walking may be a better activity for weight loss. Maintain a pace that makes your breathing slightly labored. The Mayo Clinic estimates a 240-pound person walking at 2.5 mph for 60 minutes will burn 273 calories.

Step Up

As you get fitter and stronger, increase the difficulty level of your walking workout by covering greater distances or stepping up your pace. Based on the Mayo Clinic's calculations, a 240-pound person walking 2.5 mph for 90 minutes will burn approximately 409 calories. A 240-pound person walking 3.5 mph for 60 minutes will burn 414 calories. Increase your intensity by walking up a hill or hold a couple of light dumbbells. This will burn more calories and accelerate your weight loss.

Jogging

Jogging allows you to increase the intensity of your exercise and burn more calories without the extra stress running may place on your skeletal system. A 160-pound person jogging for 30 minutes at 5 mph will burn 292 calories, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Running

Running is distinguished from jogging by speed and cadence -- the number of steps per minute. If you are relatively young, energetic and have no joint problems, running may be the appropriate exercise to help you lose weight. The Mayo Clinic estimates a 200-pound person running at 8 mph for 60 minutes will burn 1,229 calories.
