Colds and flus are relatively common illnesses. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't at least occasionally fall prey to these various viruses, particularly during the "cold and flu season" of the winter months. And although they're not typically dangerous, colds and flus can be miserable and inconvenient. There are a multitude of over-the-counter cold and flu remedies on supermarket and drugstore shelves, but natural, herbal remedies for colds, flus and other minor viruses also may be helpful for viruses of this type. Check with your doctor before trying them.
Step 1
Try echinacea supplements. According to MayoClinic.com, experts are not sure if echinacea prevents and shortens cold viruses. However, echinacea seems safe for most people and could provide protection from or treatment of colds. Obtain medical clearance from your physician before trying echinacea to be sure it is right for you.
Step 2
Try elderberry extract supplements, available in liquid, capsule and lozenge forms. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that elderberry has been used for centuries to treat respiratory illnesses, seemingly reducing congestion and helping your body flush out toxins through increased sweating. Always check with your doctor before taking elderberry, since it can interact with particular prescription medications and may not be safe for some people, such as children and pregnant women.
Step 3
Use eucalyptus lozenges. Eucalyptus has long been used in cold and flu medications and remedies, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. The University of California-Davis Student Health Services recommends eucalyptus lozenges for sore throat in particular.
Step 4
Try peppermint. Peppermint's main ingredient, menthol, is a decongestant, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. Because of this, peppermint is commonly used to treat cold and flu symptoms and is especially soothing for sore throats. Peppermint is generally used in tea or menthol chest rubs for colds and flus.
