Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a chronic condition that can affect children and continue into adulthood. Symptoms include inattention, being easily distracted, fidgeting, disorganized work habits, impulsive behavior, forgetfulness, failure to complete tasks and poor school performance. ADHD can be treated by some medications and lifestyles. Supplements also may be beneficial for this condition. Sleeping problems are another common problem for many people. You may have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or you may experience fatigue and constant sleepiness. If you suffer with sleeping problems, you may benefit from certain supplements. Always consult a doctor before taking a supplement and never replace other forms of therapy with supplements.

Essential Fatty Acids

Essential fatty acids, specifically omega-3 oils, play an important role in proper brain functioning. Therefore, these fats may be of benefit in helping to reduce or manage symptoms of ADHD, including poor concentration and school functioning. According to MayoClinic.com, research is still ongoing and more studies are required to establish a benefit. In addition to a supplement, good sources of omega-3s include salmon, walnuts, flaxseed and flaxseed oil.

Magnesium

Magnesium deficiency may play a role in ADHD. If you are deficient in magnesium, you may experience irritation, confusion and a reduced attention span. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, some research suggests that children with ADHD may be displaying the symptoms of a magnesium deficiency. It recommends that a good dose for symptom improvement is 200 mg/day. In addition to a supplement, food sources rich in magnesium include pumpkin seeds, whole grains and green leafy vegetables.

Valerian

Valerian is a supplement that may be helpful for sleeping problems. According to MayoClinic.com, valerian supplements may decrease the time you need to fall asleep and improve your sleep quality. The ingredient in valerian that produces this effect is not known. This supplement may produce side effects that include heart abnormalities and headaches. You should consult your doctor before taking this supplement.

Melatonin

Melatonin is another supplement that may help regulate your sleep. Melatonin is a natural hormone that can be found as a synthetic supplement in food stores and pharmacies. Melatonin supplements may be helpful for people who perform shift work or experience jet lag. You should consult your doctor before taking this supplement.
